Turbolinux
has announced the release of Turbolinux 12 Client edition (marketing
name: Turbolinux 2008 Client), a desktop Linux distribution targeted at
Japanese-speaking users. This is the first time a Turbolinux release
comes in the form of an installable live CD, with the major components
being Linux kernel 2.6.24.4 (co-developed with Mandriva at Mambo Labs),
KDE 3.5.9 as the default desktop, X.Org 1.4.0.90, glibc 2.7 and Tomoyo
Linux as the distribution's security framework. The live CD includes
freely distributable software only, but the commercial edition,
scheduled for release in September 2008, will include a so-called Net
User Package, a collection of value-added applications, such as the
ATOK Japanese input method editor, popular media codecs, extra TrueType
fonts and the StarSuite office suite. Please read the detailed press
release (in Japanese) for further information. The 691 MB Turbolinux 12
beta live CD is available for free download from the distribution'sproduct page,
after filling in a simple registration form. The language support on
the live CD and in the Anaconda system installer is limited to Japanese
only.
